Residents in Havant are set to see four new bin lorries on the roads as part of an investment in the borough’s waste and recycling services.
The council says leasing the vehicles will allow it to operate the service more cost-effectively over the next three years, delivering better value for money for residents while supporting the long-term sustainability of waste and recycling collections.
Netty Shepherd, cabinet lead for commercial services, said the investment was about improving performance and efficiency.
“We are investing in the future of our environmental services, ensuring that the service runs better and more efficiently.
“We have dedicated a significant amount into replacing vehicles, which will minimise potential breakdowns that cause disruption to bin collections borough-wide, in order to provide a more reliable service for our residents.”
The four new vehicles are fitted with electric bin lifts, which help to reduce fuel consumption by around nine per cent. The council says this represents a significant reduction in environmental impact compared with older models currently in use.
Each vehicle is capable of carrying up to eleven tonnes of waste, the equivalent of around three hundred and ninety full household bins. This increased capacity is expected to improve efficiency on collection rounds and reduce the number of journeys needed.
Council leaders say the investment will not only improve day-to-day waste and recycling services for residents, but also support wider environmental goals. The changes are designed to help cut carbon emissions and contribute towards the borough’s target of reaching net zero by 2045, while ensuring essential services remain fit for the future.
