Judge praises Insulate Britain protesters

Some Insulate Britain protestors were praised by a judge when they appeared in Crawley Magistrates Court.

Some of the demonstrators appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, while others pleaded guilty by post.

Three protesters, Ian Bates, 63, from Northampton, Karen Matthews, 60, and 54-year-old Biff Whipster from Canterbury, Kent, were told by District Judge Stephen Leake they had "inspired" him after making speeches about their climate concerns while representing themselves.

A judge has praised Insulate Britain protesters for their commitment to greener living despite fining them over disrupting the journeys of almost 20,000 drivers on the M25.

The motorway demonstration where members glued themselves to tarmac and one even to a police car resulted in an ambulance carrying a patient who “urgently needed to be transported” being delayed.

Though the judge said the group had inspired him to alter his own impact on the planet, he said he had a legal duty to "apply the law".
