Arun District Council confirmed that the area near the western end by the Coastguard Tower has been cordoned off as a precaution. The item is believed to be unexploded ordnance, possibly dating back to World War Two.
The beach has been cleared while bomb disposal experts carry out investigations.
This is the second incident involving suspected wartime ordnance in the area within the past two weeks.
