
Chichester’s Priory Park will travel back nearly two millennia this half-term, as it’s transformed into a bustling Roman military camp for a day of immersive history.
Organised by the Novium Museum, the event promises a packed schedule of live demonstrations, talks, and family-friendly activities in Priory Park, Chichester, on Thursday 29 May. – all bringing the world of Roman Britain vividly to life.
The programme starts at 11 a.m. with the Military Show and Talk, where visitors can discover what life was like for a Roman soldier. Reenactors in full Roman armour will demonstrate live training drills and battle tactics.
At noon, see the darker side of Roman life with Crime and Punishment, a compelling session exploring the Empire’s justice system, its laws, and its often brutal methods of maintaining order.
One of the day’s most thought-provoking sessions comes at 1.30pm, with a Slave Auction and Talk. This powerful and respectful interpretation examines the role of slavery in Roman society and its impact on daily life.
At 2.30 pm, there will be the Gladiator Show and Talk, where gladiators enter the arena in a dramatic combat display – and the crowd will decide their fate.
Throughout the day, visitors can explore a detailed Roman army encampment, try their hand at archery, and speak with archaeologists about recent local digs. There will also be interactive exhibits on Roman food, medicine, religion, music, and home life, giving a full picture of life in ancient Chichester.
The event is free to attend and offers a rare chance to engage with the rich history of Roman Chichester in an accessible and entertaining way.
