Man arrested after bomb squad called to 'suspicious package' in Worthing

A 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm

A 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm after the bomb squad were called to a property in Worthing yesterday (June 8). Inside the address the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team safely destroyed a ‘suspicious’ package.

The road in the area close to the station was closed by police as a precaution and reopened at 10.10pm. According to Stagecoach, bus services were disrupted and had to be diverted.

Sussex Police told V2 Radio in a statement: “Police attended an address in Tarring Road, Worthing around 9am on Wednesday (June 8). Inside the address officers were concerned about a suspicious package that was found.

“The Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team were called to the scene and safely destroyed the package. A 52-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.”

"The man remains in custody. Officers have thanked residents for their patience during the incident and said an increased police presence should be expected in the area while enquiries continue. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, and forensics also attended the scene".
