March for Manhood taking place this weekend

Chichester is about to see a protest this weekend as people March for Manhood and the Harbour Villages.

It takes place at 10am on Saturday 29th January with the aim of presenting a 5,000 signature petition to housing minister Michael Gove.

The group behind it say they're doing it because of the Government pressing local councils to built more houses - in what they say is regardless of local need or circumstance.

Campaigners who are opposed to the urbanisation of the Manhood and Harbour village areas say this means 100% of the quota to build new houses is going to be built on less than 30% of land, mainly effecting the Peninsula and neighbouring costal villages.

But housing isn't the only issue they're protesting over, as the recent fining of Southern Water for sewage disposal is creating further tension.

The group say the illegal dumps in Chichester harbour means many new homes are already having sewage pumped out and taken away in trucks, something they believe should not be intensified with more unnecessary housing.

In a statement, campaigners said:

"If we need new homes, we need them where there are jobs, where there is proper sewage disposal and proper transport links, and where the land is not going to become sea in our grandchildren’s lifetimes.

The council aren’t brave enough to defy the government’s diktat to build an unrealistic quota of new houses, so local people have decided that they must confront government."

Anyone interested in coming along to see what it's all about is welcome, and the plan is to meet at Priory Park at 10am, followed by a march to County Hall.
