University of Sussex bosses say there’s no cause for alarm locally, despite a meningitis outbreak in Kent.
Health officials are investigating 20 cases in Canterbury, but none have been linked to Sussex.
The university says the risk to students here is low, but awareness of symptoms is key.
Meanwhile, vaccination is being rolled out to thousands of students living in halls at the University of Kent.
In a statement online the University of Sussex said: "You may have seen recent media reports about a meningococcal disease (meningitis) outbreak in Kent. The strain behind cases in Kent has now been identified as Meningitis B (known as MenB).
"The outbreak is currently contained only in Canterbury and Kent, and no cases are linked to the University of Sussex or any other schools or universities outside of Kent.
"The risk to Sussex students is very low. Meningitis does not spread easily, but it is still important to be aware of symptoms and know when to seek help."
Meningitis can start like flu, so watch for:
• High temperature (fever)
• Severe headache
• Vomiting
• Muscle and joint pain
• Cold hands and feet, limb pain
As it develops, more serious signs can include:
• Stiff neck
• Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
• Confusion or difficulty concentrating
• Extreme drowsiness or difficulty waking
• Seizures (fits)
Rash warning sign:
• A rash that does NOT fade when pressed with a glass
(this is a key sign of meningococcal septicaemia)
In babies and young children:
• High-pitched crying
• Floppy or unresponsive
• Refusing feeds
• Bulging soft spot on the head
Meningitis can become life-threatening very quickly.
If you notice symptoms, seek medical help immediately by calling 999 or going to A&E.
