Students at Priory School in Southsea are benefiting from a major upgrade to their outdoor space, designed to support exercise, creativity and social interaction.
The project, funded by Portsmouth City Council, has transformed previously underused areas into a more accessible and practical environment for the school’s growing population of more than 1,280 pupils.
Before the improvements, much of the outdoor space was difficult to maintain and often unusable due to flooding. The layout also limited how students could use the area during break times and outdoor lessons.
The redesigned space now includes a range of new features to support both learning and leisure. Flood-resistant planting beds have been introduced to better manage rainwater, helping to reduce waterlogging and ease pressure on the local drainage system.
Accessibility has also been significantly improved. Ramps have replaced steps in key areas, and new pathways have been created to allow safer and smoother movement around the site for all students.
A refurbished amphitheatre now provides a flexible space for outdoor lessons, performances and school events, while a new basketball post offers opportunities for physical activity during breaks.
To further encourage social interaction, an enclosed dining area was added ahead of the main works, giving students a sheltered space to eat and spend time together. Additional seating areas have also been installed around the school grounds.
The improvements aim to create a more inclusive, resilient and engaging outdoor environment for students now and in the future.
Councillor Nick Dorrington, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “It’s fantastic to see our continued commitment to funding and improving local schools. These upgrades are tailored to the students and not only improve accessibility but also give them more opportunities to socialise, stay active, and enjoy fresh air throughout the day. Watching young people enjoy these improvements, make the most of the new space, and take genuine pride in their school shows exactly why this funding matters”
