Portsmouth City Council will mark Commonwealth Day with a special flag-raising ceremony today.
The event takes place at 9:30 this morning outside the Civic Offices in Guildhall Square and is expected to last around 30-40minutes.
The City Council say it will celebrate the diversity and shared values of the Commonwealth under this year’s theme — “Unlocking opportunities together for a prosperous Commonwealth.”
Around 50 guests are expected to attend, alongside community representatives who will raise flags on behalf of several Commonwealth nations and organisations. The ceremony will also include a Commonwealth Day message from His Majesty the King.
Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of the council, said: “I’m pleased that Portsmouth is once again marking Commonwealth Day as part of our civic calendar. This ceremony recognises the shared values and long‑standing connections that link our city with others around the world, and residents are welcome to attend.”
The event will conclude with a performance celebrating the Commonwealth’s rich heritage.
Flags will be raised for: Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, the Commonwealth, Ghana, India, Malta, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Uganda and the Union Flag.
The ceremony will be led by Lord Mayor Chaplain Canon James McAuley and will conclude with a Nigerian Afrobeat performance by Olakunke Agu.
Members of the public are welcome to attend and watch the ceremony.
