Relief on the horizon for A27 drivers as roadworks near completion

After several weeks of long delays, traffic build-up, and widespread commuter frustration, drivers using the A27 near Brighton can finally expect smoother journeys ahead.

The major roadworks between the A23 at Patcham and the Hollingbury exit, which have been ongoing since April, are scheduled to finish this Saturday, according to National Highways.

The project, while necessary, has caused severe disruption for thousands of motorists. Peak-time tailbacks have frequently stretched up to an hour, with delays becoming a regular part of daily commutes for many. Frustrated drivers have taken to social media in recent weeks to share their experiences, with many voicing concerns over the timing, duration, and communication around the works.

National Highways has confirmed the roadworks were essential to carry out drainage improvements and barrier repairs—crucial maintenance aimed at improving long-term road safety and resilience, especially in adverse weather conditions. Although the benefits of the upgrades are expected to be significant, the timing and length of the disruption have drawn criticism.

For local residents and regular commuters, the end of this project will come as a welcome relief. Many have had to alter their travel routines, leave earlier than usual, or endure extended periods in traffic while navigating the affected stretch of road.

With the final phase of the work now wrapping up, National Highways says the road will fully reopen by the weekend, restoring normal traffic flow. This marks the end of one of the most disruptive stretches of maintenance seen on the A27 in recent years.

Drivers are being advised to check for any final updates before travelling, but the outlook is positive. Once the cones and barriers are removed, the improvements are expected to deliver a smoother, safer drive for all road users.

As traffic begins to return to normal, commuters across the region will no doubt be hoping it’s a while before the next major roadworks arrive.
