The lifesaving team are asking us to be careful over this festive period
The RNLI in West Sussex is urging people to be extra cautious if they go sea swimming over the festive period
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution says people need to think before going in the open water due to cold water shock and rough weather conditions.
Those who do plan to go in - they've issued advice such as go in slowly, stay in shallow water and not for too long.
Some tips have been released online for people who may be thinking of taking a trip to the seaside...
- Hold hands:
Keep little ones close and hold their hands when walking on the beaches. Large waves can easily knock people over
- Understand the danger:
Swimming in cold water is a lot more difficult than a normal swimming pool - it should only be for the very experienced, using suitable wetsuits, in very calm conditions and with friends.
- Beware of hidden dangers:
There can be hidden dangers in the sea like rip tides, big waves and wind pushing you in a certain direction. Make sure you are a strong swimmer and go with someone and let them know where you are at all times.
