St. George's Day Parade to take place in Chichester this weekend

Saturday 23rd April 2022 will see the 100th Anniversary of the St. George’s Day Service held within Chichester Cathedral, which initially the Regiment, and now The Regimental Association has been commemorating since 1922.

The opening of the Regimental Chapel in the Cathedral on the 11 November 1921 provided a point of congregation for not only veterans of the regiment but also relatives of the fallen from the Great War. With 7,302 men killed from the regiment the Chapel would become somewhere that relatives could visit in quiet contemplation and seek out the name of their loved one on the memorial panels affixed to the walls of the Chapel.

With the first St. George’s Day service being held in the newly dedicated chapel on 23rd April 1922 it has meant that this year has become a very meaningful milestone, and one the Regimental Association wishes to commemorate with as much dignity, solemnity, and ceremony as possible. An editorial published in the local press in 1922 has provided enough information as to that service, that this St. George’s Day will follow a very similar format as that taken one hundred years ago.

A veteran’s parade, complete with Standards flying, will be led from Priory Park to the Cathedral by the Band of The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, the Royal Sussex successor regiment. They will be accompanied by a 40 strong contingent from the Sussex Army Cadet Force. Timed to depart the Park at 1100 hrs the Mayor of Chichester, Cllr. John Hughes, also a veteran, will take the salute outside the Council House in North Street as the parade passes.

Mayors from the regiment’s Freedom Towns of Sussex will fall in behind the parade, the whole of which is marshalled by Sgt. Dan Cross of the Royal Military Police Special Operations Regiment. In addition to Civic dignitaries from Sussex being invited the Association has actively sought the participation of members of the public who can trace a relative who’s name appears on the memorial boards. And we are delighted that say that around 30 such relatives will be in attendance.
