More than 150 traffic offence tickets have been issued since Sussex Police launched its Fatal Five Unit in January.
Officers have also seized over 30 uninsured vehicles and made more than 20 arrests, and supported more than 25 Community SpeedWatch sessions where speed has been identified as an issue.
The specialist team targets the main causes of serious crashes, with operations taking place across both East and West Sussex.
The Fatal Five Unit was set up specifically to tackle the five most common causes of fatal and serious injury collisions:
- Drink and drug-driving
- Speeding
- Failing to wear a seatbelt
- Distracted driving
- Careless driving
These are among some of the incidents the team have responded to in recent weeks:
SELSEY
While supporting the local Neighbourhood Policing Team with an antisocial driving operation in Selsey on 20 February, officers became aware of a Ford Transit van displaying no insurance.
The driver was stopped and failed a roadside breath test.
Stephen Kneller, 43, of Dennys Close, Selsey, is due to appear before Worthing Magistrates’ Court on 14 April, charged with drink-driving and driving with no insurance.
WORTHING
Officers on patrol stopped a BMW 3 Series close to Lyons Farm on the A27 at Worthing on 17 February, as it was showing as having no insurance.
The driver – a 37-year-old man from Lancing – was spoken to and failed a roadside DrugWipe test for cocaine.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of drug-driving, driving without a valid licence and driving with no insurance, and has been bailed pending further enquiries.
A BMW 2 Series activated an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) camera on 31 January.
The driver – a 34-year-old man from London – was outstanding for a GBH in October.
He was stopped on the A23 at Handcross and spoken to, and failed a roadside DrugWipe test for cannabis.
He was arrested for GBH and drug-driving, and has since been bailed as the investigation into this, and the GBH, continues.
CRAWLEY
While conducting speed checks in Southgate Avenue, Crawley, on 21 February, a man was spotted riding an e-scooter on the pavement.
He was stopped and it was confirmed he did not have a valid licence or insurance to cover the vehicle’s use. He also failed a roadside DrugWipe test for cannabis.
The 43-year-old, from Crawley, was arrested for all three offences and bailed pending the outcome of blood results for drug use.
SEE IT, REPORT IT
Sussex Police says the public can continue to report any incidents of antisocial driving through the Operation Crackdown website. Visual evidence such as dash cam footage is preferable, however, any submissions without video recordings can still help to build a picture of offending.
