Sussex Police recognised in Stonewall’s List of Top 100 employers for LGBTQ+ people

Sussex Police continues its journey as an inclusive employer with independent recognition in the list of top 100 organisations to work for by leading LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall.

The charity ranked Sussex Police 49th in its ‘Top 100 Employers 2021’ list and it also received a ‘Gold Award’ for its commitment to inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the workplace.

The force has consistently featured in the charity’s recent rankings, rising by 19 places after being placed 68th in 2020 and 81st in 2019.

Stonewall say it’s Top 100 Employers list is compiled from the Workplace Equality Index which is the UK’s leading benchmarking tool for LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace. The annual survey is voluntary and allows employers to measure, verify and improve their inclusion practice.

Chief Constable Jo Shiner said: “We know people deliver their best work when they can be their true selves and we work hard to ensure that Sussex Police is both welcoming and inclusive so that we truly reflect the communities we serve. This is something that I am passionate about.

“I’m therefore extremely proud that, once again, we are recognised by Stonewall as an inclusive employer and, whilst accepting there is always more work to do, this award is credit to everyone striving to develop the strength in diversity within Sussex Police.”

Liz Ward, Director of Programmes at Stonewall (she/her), said: “We spend so much of our time at work, and our career can be a huge part of how we define ourselves. Every single lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer person should be able to be themselves at work. From understanding how HR policies, such as parental leave, will affect them, to being reassured that they can speak openly about their lives and partners at the coffee machine, the impact of inclusive workplaces can be life-changing.

“It’s fantastic that Sussex Police has gained a gold award for its efforts and commitment to creating an inclusive work environment, and we look forward to seeing and supporting the rest of their inclusion journey.

“We’re also delighted for Sussex Police whose incredible work towards LGBTQ+ inclusion this year has seen them land at 49th place in the Top 100. Every employer has a duty to make sure that their LGBTQ+ staff are free from discrimination at work, and our Top 100 list, alongside our Workplace Equality Index helps organisations reflect on their inclusion journey and celebrate best practice.”
