A VUE EPIC cinema screen could be coming to Gunwharf Quays, promising a bigger screen, enhanced visuals, and immersive sound.
The VUE cinema venue in Gunwharf Quays has submitted a planning application to Portsmouth City Council for an EPIC screen.
VUE has already opened seven EPIC screens across the country, which are designed to take the cinema experience “to the next level.”
EPIC screens utilise lightseering technology to provide 4k high-dynamic range images, offering greater brightness and colour contrast for “immersive and lifelike visuals.”
The experience is completed with Atmos sound, a three-dimensional audio system with over 64 channels across the auditorium.
The VUE website suggests this can allow the audience to hear subtle details like “raindrops overhead, footsteps sneaking up behind you, the subtlest breath of a performer.”
If approved, the new screen would be the largest in Hampshire; the closest rival is the Chichester Cineworld IMAX screen.
It would measure approximately 18.6m x 8.7m, making it slightly smaller than the Chichester IMAX screen.
While EPIC is large, true IMAX screens often remain taller and more expansive, particularly in dedicated, large-scale venues.
EPIC is generally positioned as a more accessible premium experience, sometimes costing around £2 more than a standard ticket, while IMAX is often priced higher.
The cinema group applied for a planning application to change their sign, positioning the word EPIC in block capital metallic lettering below VUE.
According to planning documents, the new screen will replace screen three, out of the 14 screens in the venue.
The VUE website indicates the screen is “coming soon” to Portsmouth and Bromley.
It adds that the venue will close between March 15-17 to make way for “ultra lux” chairs.
