From 13 February until the 5 April Chichester Cathedral will be showing a compelling new exhibition by British artist Alice Carter. ASHES TO FIRE is a series of seven large-scale oil paintings, offering meditation on key moments in the Easter cycle.
From the solemnity of Ash Wednesday to the blazing energy of Pentecost, her carefully considered compositions trace the emotional arc of the Easter story. Through bold colour, layered symbolism, and moments of quiet intensity, Carter reflects on themes of grief, hope, and transformation, capturing the journey from ashes to fire in a contemporary visual language.
Carter's artwork also offers a compelling dialogue with John Piper’s iconic High Altar tapestry, which is being celebrated with a year-long exhibition (Glowing + Alive, 13/02 – 15/11) at the Cathedral to mark 60 years since it was installed.
ASHES TO FIRE is supported by The Farmington Institute and will be displayed in the Cathedral’s South Transept. It is free to those visiting Chichester Cathedral, however donations are welcome. In conjunction with ASHES TO FIRE, the Cathedral will run a programme of events, including special tours led by the artist, details of which can be found on the Cathedral website - https://www.chichestercathedral.org.uk/events/ashes-fire
