South East Water’s chief executive is to face questions from residents and businesses in Sussex Weald following repeated water supply problems across the constituency.
Sussex Weald MP Nusrat Ghani has invited chief executive John Halsall to attend a public meeting on Friday 23 October, giving local people the opportunity to raise concerns directly with the company.
Communities including Crowborough, Heathfield and Horam experienced significant disruption during the hot summer, with some homes and businesses left without supplies for extended periods.
South East Water has previously cited the exceptionally hot weather as one of the factors behind increased demand and disruption.
Ms Ghani says concerns remain about the resilience of the local water network and the frequency with which communities experience problems.
She said: “There is some form of disruption to our water supplies most months, causing distress to residents, businesses, and especially farmers who rely on consistent supplies of water to keep their farms running and animals alive.
“I have welcomed John Halsall to the constituency to hear first-hand the issues that my constituents have had to deal with. We are tired of excuses used by the water company. We all want to see the water infrastructure invested in properly and water disruption managed quickly.
“The vast majority of my constituents understand that problems can occur and that things can go wrong, but this seems to be happening on a regular basis with people left without water for weeks on end.”
Mr Halsall had initially agreed to meet the MP at her constituency office, but Ms Ghani said she wanted residents and businesses to have the opportunity to question him directly.
She added: “I believe it is only fair that residents and businesses can speak directly to power. I will be hosting a public meeting with local stakeholders and residents, giving the community a chance to put their questions directly to the boss of South East Water.”
The meeting will take place at a venue within the Sussex Weald constituency during the daytime on Friday 23 October.
People wishing to submit a question or apply for a place at the meeting can register through Ms Ghani’s website. Attendance will be limited because of venue capacity.
