Uber sees off £340m claim by London cabbies

Uber has claimed victory in a long-running legal battle brought by taxi rivals, including thousands of London black cab drivers.

The ride-hailing app said it had won its bid to throw out two lawsuits, valued at around £340m, at the High Court.

Uber was sued in 2024 - in a case delayed by the COVID pandemic - over allegations connected to the granting of a private hire vehicle operating licence covering the capital in 2012.

Uber denied giving "misleading and inaccurate information" to Transport for London and further argued the lawsuits were filed after the six-year limitation period for bringing such a claim.

They sought damages of nearly £200m for around 13,000 black cab drivers, while a claimant suing on behalf of two now-defunct companies, Kabbie and Iride, was seeking around £140m.

The claims management firm which represented the black cab drivers had said, at the time their case was filed, that each was potentially eligible for compensation of up to £25,000 to cover for loss of earnings.

But the judge Mr Justice Simon Birt, in a written ruling, dismissed the claims on the limitation grounds without considering the merits of the case.

RGL management said in response to the ruling: "We are obviously very disappointed and are considering all options available to the claimant cab drivers with the legal team."

An Uber spokesperson said: "Uber is proud to work with thousands of private hire and black cab drivers to serve millions of passengers across London.

"We are pleased that the court has dismissed all of these claims entirely at the earliest opportunity and the ruling today has put these legacy matters firmly in the past."
