Three dead in two-vehicle crash in Northumberland

Three people have died following a two-car crash in Northumberland.

Police are appealing for information following the collision on the A1, between Denwick and South Charlton, at around 2.30pm on Thursday.

It was reported that a silver Volkswagen Polo heading northbound collided with a red Hyundai i20 travelling in the opposite direction, Northumbria Police said.

The force said the cause of the collision had yet to be established.

The Hyundai driver, a man in his 80s, and a female passenger in her 70s died at the scene.

A woman in her 60s, who was a passenger in the Polo, also died. The driver of the vehicle, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The next of kin of those in the Polo have been informed and are receiving support from officers.

Police said efforts were ongoing to inform the family of those in the Hyundai.

Inspector Steven Clare said: "This is an incredibly tragic incident where three people have lost their lives - and one other person remains in a serious condition.

"Our thoughts remain firmly with all of their loved ones, and we are dedicated to getting them the answers they deserve."

A section of the road was closed following the crash for around seven hours but has since been reopened.

Police have launched an investigation and urged anyone who was travelling in the area at the time, and who may have CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward.

Inspector Clare said: "We know this is a very busy stretch of road through Northumberland - and there will have likely been many motorists passing in both directions.

"We're especially keen to hear from anyone who did initially stop at the scene to help but left prior to police arriving."

He added: "We would also like anyone travelling that route at around 2.30pm who has dashcam footage to get in touch - even if they did not witness the collision, as the footage may still hold valuable information.

"If you were in the area or have any information that might help with our investigation, please don't hesitate to get in touch."
