West Sussex County Council is on course to complete more than £19million worth of road and footway improvements by April
Work is on course to complete more than £19million worth of improvements on West Sussex’s roads and footways before April – subject to factors such as prolonged severe weather.
In September last year, West Sussex County Council announced the start of the improvement work. Here is what has been achieved so far:
- Road resurfacing: 17km of carriageway resurfaced – this part of the programme is more than 50 per cent complete
- Road patching: 59,731 square metres of patching – this part of the programme is about 85 per cent complete
- Road microasphalt treatment: 6.3km – this part is complete for the current financial year
- Footway reconstruction: 7km works completed – this part is about 60 per cent complete
- Footway microasphalt treatment: 15km completed - this part is complete for the current financial year
- Road marking and road signs – 110km of the road network has been identified for work - approximately 90 per cent of road markings and 70 per cent of the signs sites identified are complete
Roger Elkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “Progress to date is encouraging and a tribute to the hard work of the Highways team and our contractors.
“Subject to factors such as severe weather, we are on course to complete most, if not all, the improvements we hoped to achieve this financial year.”
The £19.03million programme of works comprises:
Road resurfacing: £8.89million
Road patching: £6.12million
Signs and road line marking improvements: £2.00million
Microasphalt treatment*: £0.52million
Footway improvements: £1.50million
The £19.03million worth of improvements on West Sussex’s roads and footways is set for completion in the 2020/21 financial year. Subject to confirmation at a Full Council meeting on 12 February, the next two financial years will see a £12million boost to the usual level of spending on West Sussex’s highways (that’s £6million extra in the 2021-22 financial year and an extra £6million in 2022/23).
