The former dance studio and boxing gym on Milton Road could be transformed into a five-storey co-living block.
Plans submitted by The Midas Plan Consultants to Portsmouth City Council would see the vacant dance studio demolished and replaced with shared accommodation.
A co-living apartment block is a residential development where tenants have private bedrooms or studios while sharing communal facilities such as kitchens, lounges and social areas.
The site at 241-243 Milton Road was previously home to the former Movement Initiative dance studio and, before that, Bally’s Boxing Gym.
Under the proposals, the new co-living block would provide 21 bedrooms, alongside stepped terracing and private balconies for some flats.
If approved, the five-storey building would provide private double bedrooms featuring a kitchenette, storage space, dining area and en-suite bathroom.
Planning documents state the “en-suite rooms will provide sufficient space for residents to sleep and relax; however, they will rely on communal kitchen/dining areas and laundry facilities to meet their day to day needs.”
All rooms would measure at least 18sqm, with around 10 per cent designed to be wheelchair accessible.
Planning documents state the development would be car-free because “the site is in close proximity to bus and train stations, local shops and services along Eastney Road, to and within the Portsmouth City Centre”.
The documents add: “In the event of grant of full planning approval, the owner would ensure that the facility is operated and managed in an efficient, neighbourly, safe and responsible manner.
“It is anticipated that this will be achieved via a contract with a reputable and proven residential management operator that specialises in the same or comparable community-oriented housing for rent.”
The application states co-living “benefits young professionals facing affordability pressures, as well as those that are new to an area, as it allows them to establish roots and make friendships when otherwise they might face a degree of isolation”.
So far, no members of the public have commented on the plans, which can be accessed on the council’s planning portal using the reference 26/00493/FUL.
