DFDS Ferries has apologised after children were left distressed when an adult film was accidentally shown on one of its cross-Channel services.

The incident happened on a ferry travelling from Dieppe to Newhaven, after the vessel was forced to return to France because of a technical fault at Newhaven Port. The delay meant passengers were left waiting onboard while engineers worked to resolve the issue.

According to reports, some passengers had asked crew members if they could watch Formula One during the wait. The race was shown on a television in one of the passenger lounges, but after it finished, an adult film began playing in error. Families on board said children were present in the room at the time and that several were left upset by what they saw.

DFDS has since issued an apology. The company says it’s investigating how the inappropriate content came to be broadcast on a public screen and has promised to review its onboard entertainment procedures to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

The ferry company, which operates several routes across the Channel and North Sea, is currently waiting to find out if it has been named the World’s Leading Ferry Operator at this year’s World Travel Awards. The timing of the incident is particularly awkward for DFDS, as the firm has held the title for several consecutive years and has built a strong reputation for customer service and safety.
