Residents across the South are being reminded to make sure they are registered to vote ahead of May’s local elections, with the deadline now just weeks away.
Anyone who wants to take part in the elections must be on the electoral register by midnight on the 20th of April. Those who are not registered by that point will not be able to cast a vote, either in person or by post.
Local elections give people the chance to have their say on who represents them on councils across the region, with decisions made by councillors affecting everyday issues such as housing, planning, transport, local services and council tax. Election officials are urging anyone who has recently moved house, changed their name, or turned 18 to check that their details are up to date.
Polling day itself will take place on Thursday, the 7th of May. Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm, allowing voters to attend at a time that suits them around work or other commitments. Voters are reminded to bring valid photo identification with them when attending a polling station, as this is now required under election rules.
Those who cannot attend in person on the day still have options, including applying for a postal or proxy vote, although separate deadlines apply for those arrangements.
Registration is quick and can be completed online, taking just a few minutes. Electoral services teams across the South say registering early helps them prepare and ensures a smoother voting process on polling day.
People are being encouraged not to leave it until the last minute, to make sure their voice is heard in May’s local elections.
