Armistice Day is being marked across the South this morning.
The two-minute silence at eleven will honour those who lost their lives in war and all who have served.
Services are taking place in Chichester, Worthing, Brighton, Eastbourne and Portsmouth, where people are gathering at war memorials to pay their respects:
-
Chichester: At 11:00 am at The Cross (Market Cross, East Street), there will be a parade of standards from the Royal Sussex Regimental Association and the Queen’s Regiment Association along with veterans, followed by a two-minute silence.
-
Worthing: A gathering at the War Memorial, outside Worthing Town Hall (Chapel Road), is scheduled for 11:00 am, when the town will observe the two-minute silence.
-
Brighton (Brighton & Hove): The service is set for 10:50 am at the Brighton War Memorial in Old Steine Gardens, with the two-minute silence at 11:00 am.
-
Eastbourne: A service begins at 10:40 am at the War Memorial Houses on Victoria Drive, attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne, marking Armistice Day.
-
Portsmouth: The Armistice Day service will start at 10:45 am at the Cenotaph in Guildhall Square, followed by the two-minute silence at the 11-o’clock hour.
Armistice Day serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of war and the importance of working towards a more peaceful future. While the ceremonies and silences are solemn, they also provide a chance for communities to come together in unity and gratitude. Whether at a local war memorial, in schools, workplaces, or homes, taking part in the silence connects people across generations in shared respect and remembrance.
More than a historical anniversary, Armistice Day continues to play a vital role in ensuring the lessons of the past are not forgotten, encouraging reflection, compassion, and commitment to peace for future generations.
