Drivers across the South are being urged to plan ahead as the Christmas travel rush begins, with busy conditions expected on roads and at airports over the coming days.
Major routes across the region are forecast to see heavy traffic this afternoon and into the evening, as millions of people set off on festive journeys to visit family and friends. Motorists are being advised to allow extra time, check routes before travelling and be prepared for delays, particularly on key commuter roads and motorway links.
Traffic experts say the combination of last-minute shopping trips, school holidays and people finishing work for the Christmas break is likely to add to congestion, especially during peak travel times later today. Drivers are also being reminded to ensure their vehicles are winter-ready, with checks on tyres, fuel levels and screen wash recommended before setting off.
It’s not just road users facing a busy period. In the air, Gatwick Airport is preparing for one of its most demanding spells of the year. The airport has predicted that Sunday the 28th of December will be its busiest travel day this Christmas, with around 757 flights scheduled to depart and arrive.
Passengers flying over the festive period are being advised to arrive at the airport in good time, check airline guidance in advance and be mindful that security and baggage areas may be particularly busy during peak hours.
With millions of journeys expected across the South by road and air, travellers are being encouraged to stay up to date with the latest traffic and travel information.
