A by-election will be held next month in the Paulsgrove ward of Portsmouth City Council.

The vote is scheduled for Thursday 23 October and follows the resignation of Councillor Brian Madgwick. The official Notice of Election has been published and is available on the Portsmouth City Council website.

Nominations for candidates are now open and will close at 4pm on Friday 26 September. Anyone wishing to stand in the election must submit their papers by that deadline.

Voters living in Paulsgrove who are not already registered will need to do so by midnight on Tuesday 7 October to take part in the poll. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 8 October, while applications for proxy votes must be submitted by 5pm on Wednesday 15 October.

The council is reminding residents that voter identification will be required at polling stations. A range of official documents can be used, including passports, driving licences and certain concessionary travel passes. Full details of acceptable ID can be found on the Electoral Commission’s website.

Paulsgrove is one of 14 wards in Portsmouth, each represented by three councillors. The result of the by-election will not change overall control of the council but will determine who represents thousands of residents in the area on local issues, from housing and schools to roads and community services.

Polling stations across the ward will be open from 7am to 10pm on election day.
