Sussex Police is to receive £103,033 from Chichester District Council to install 12 Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras across the district.
The money will be released from the Community Infrastructure Levy – a pot paid into by developers to help fund local infrastructure. It was approved during a meeting of the cabinet on Tuesday (November 4).
The proposed sites for the cameras are: West Wittering Road, Lavant Road, Old Broyle Road, Bognor Road, St Pancras/Westhampnett Road, Oving Road, North Mundham Road, A259 Cathedral Way (two locations), Terminus Road, Stockbridge Road, and Whyke Road.
Bill Brisbane, cabinet member for planning, said: “The routes are currently blind spots in the existing police ANPR network, and camera installations at these locations will close them off to potential criminal activity.”
The work is expected to be finished before the end of the financial year.
Questions were asked about the need for such cameras in the north of the district, which is largely under the South Downs National Park Authority.
John Cross, cabinet member for culture, sport & place, is the council’s representative on the Authority and agreed to raise the matter.
