The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has been given a prestigious carbon emissions award for its performance over 2021.

The SCFT has been named a 2021 Climate Champion by the Health Care Without Harm organisation (HCWH) for their Care Without Carbon programme, winning three awards:

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction (Energy) – Gold
  • Renewable Energy – Gold
  • Climate Leadership – Silver

The Trust is one of over 50 healthcare organisations across 14 countries recognised as this year’s Climate Champions for 2021, which recognises their ongoing transformation to being more sustainable and the progress they've made towards reducing carbon emissions to meet their Net Zero by 2040 target.

Mike Jennings, Chief Financial Officer and Board lead for sustainability, said: "I am delighted that the hard work of our Care Without Carbon team has been recognised.

"Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has pioneered an approach to sustainable healthcare that is leading the Green Plans across our Integrated Care System and we are determined to meet our target of Net Zero Carbon by 2040, not just as a Trust but as a healthcare system."

They also say they are stepping up to the carbon challenge to ensure they become a global leader in sustainable and low-carbon healthcare - said to be key to enabling better health outcomes for our community across West Sussex.

Having already exceeded their commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 34% by 2020, which they say has saved around £10 million, they have also developed s new Green Plan for Care Without Carbon, which will ensure they meet the NHS Net Zero Carbon target by 2040.

They also support local healthcare partners with sustainability, aiming to realise the full benefits of moving to a more sustainable approach to healthcare across the system and meeting the ambitious new national requirements for carbon reduction, and say they look forward to working with partners to drive the sustainability and climate change agenda.
