Cllr Jonathan Chowen's letter to Ukraine

The people of Horsham District stand with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russia's unprovoked attack on freedom and democracy. #StandWithUkraine

The pictures and reports coming from Ukraine (not seen by the Russian people) are very shocking and show that we are involved in a proxy-war with Putin over the future of a democratic European country.  The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Eastern Europe is of an unprecedented scale with, the current refugee burden being borne by neighbouring countries.

In this country we have a long history of opening our doors to refugees fleeing conflict and oppressive regimes. In the District we have some 90 Ukrainians and they must be desperately worried about the safety of their relatives and friends caught up in the crisis.

I welcome the news from the Prime Minister that we are relaxing our entry rules.  We need to think about what sponsored accommodation might be needed locally, if we receive an influx of Ukrainian refugees.

Local companies have already offered to assist with jobs and training for Ukrainians while they reside here as a sanctuary.

Horsham District Council is committed to working closely with refugee and community groups, together with West Sussex County Council which leads on refugee resettlement in our area.
