Constance Marten, the aristocrat convicted over the death of her baby daughter whose body was found in Brighton, is seeking permission to appeal against her conviction for gross negligence manslaughter.
Marten was found guilty in July, alongside her partner Mark Gordon, after a retrial at the Old Bailey. The case drew national attention, both for the couple’s high-profile disappearance and the tragic discovery of their child’s body in Brighton.
The pair had gone on the run in January 2023 shortly after the birth of their daughter, Victoria. They travelled across the country, often moving between temporary accommodation and campsites, in an attempt to avoid contact with social services. Eventually, they set up camp in freezing conditions on the South Downs near Newhaven, despite having no proper shelter or supplies for the baby.
Two months later, after a major police search, Victoria’s remains were discovered in a carrier bag inside a shed on an allotment in Brighton.
Now, Marten is seeking to challenge the ruling, claiming there are grounds for appeal.
Sentencing for the pair is due to take place in September.
