Deadline approaching for West Sussex residents to share views on future of local government

Residents, businesses, and community organisations across West Sussex are being reminded that time is running out to have their say on how local councils should be structured in the future.

A county-wide survey, which launched on 17 July, is set to close on Wednesday 13 August at 11:59pm. So far, more than 4,500 people have taken part.

The survey is being jointly run by Adur District Council, Arun District Council, Chichester District Council, Crawley Borough Council, Horsham District Council, Mid Sussex District Council, West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council. It aims to gather views from people who live or work in the area on what council services they use and how they believe local government in West Sussex should be organised.

The feedback will inform a collective response to a Government request for proposals to move towards a single-tier system of local government, replacing the current two-tier model of county and district or borough councils.

The participating councils say they are working together to ensure the proposals submitted reflect the needs and priorities of local communities. These proposals are due to be submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government by 26 September 2025. A formal Government consultation will follow, with a final decision expected in Spring 2026.

Residents can take part in the survey online at www.shapingwestsussex.org, or pick up a paper copy from their local library or council office.
