Disabled people get better facilities in Shoreham.

The Shoreham Centre has been made even more accessible following the addition of a Changing Places facility.

A new Changing Places toilet - a larger, accessible facility with specialist access equipment - has been installed on the ground floor of the community centre following a successful grant application by Adur District Council.

The new facility has been funded by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) in partnership with Muscular Dystrophy UK, a charity seeking to better the lives of those suffering with muscular dystrophy and similar conditions. The council was awarded £100,000 to introduce the toilet.

After careful consideration by the council, it was decided that the new facility would be installed adjacent to the community centre’s existing male and female toilets on the ground floor, which used to be a seating area.

It's become the first Changing Places facility in Shoreham town centre and the second of its kind in the district. The council applied for the fund in hope of making its town centre more accessible for its residents and visitors.

The facility has also been added to the national Changing Places Toilets register and website, helping people living or visiting the area to find their nearest accessible facility.

The project was installed on time and to budget by Sussex-based business Cheesmur Building Contractors.

Cllr Emma Evans, Adur’s cabinet member for the environment and leisure, said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to introduce a Changing Places facility to the Shoreham Centre.

“Although the building is home to a number of disabled toilets, it’s great that the community centre is now home to a facility which is setting the standard for accessibility.

“I’d like to thank DLUHC for making this project possible and our council officers for implementing the new facility.”
