The South’s police forces have begun their seasonal campaign targeting drink and drug drivers, with Sussex Police reminding motorists: “Think you won’t get caught? Think again.”
During last year’s operation, officers made 270 arrests in Sussex.
Chief Constable Jo Shiner, who is also the roads policing lead for the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said: “Every year, we see a number of innocent people killed or seriously injured on our roads by drivers who are high on drink or drugs, and it needs to stop.
“The impact on victims and their families is devastating, and no one should expect to receive a knock on the door to be told they have lost their loved one in a collision due to a drink or drug-driver.
“With the festive season now upon us, we will be stepping up patrols again this month – in addition to routine roads policing duties 365 days a year – to ensure we protect all road users in Sussex and bring those offenders to justice.”
In 2024, Hampshire & IOW Constabulary made a total of 322 arrests during Operation Limit. There were 152 motorists arrested on suspicion of drink driving and 170 arrested on suspicion of drug driving.
Chief Inspector Emma Hart, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, said: “Drink and drug driving kills and seriously injures people. The decision can be life-changing for you and the people around you, and there is absolutely no excuse for it.
“You will face serious consequences if we catch you driving while impaired from drink or drugs.
“You could lose your licence, and not having a car in the modern world can also mean you lose your job as a result.
“We’re asking everyone to take responsibility and help us save lives. Don’t get behind the wheel if you’re not fit to drive.”
