Chichester will be filled with colour, scent and creativity in June as the city marks Great Big Green Week and the final day of Chichester Cathedral’s Festival of Flowers.
The Walk of the Dandelion is a free event taking place on Saturday 6 June, from 10am until 4pm. It is a collaboration between Culture Spark, Chichester Festival Theatre, Chichester Cathedral and the Festival of Flowers, Chichester BID, The Novium Museum and Pallant House Gallery.
At the heart of the event will be Daniel, an eight-foot ethereal puppet created by Luke Brown Dance Company. Described as an ancient man of the earth, Daniel will travel through Chichester city centre, sharing dandelions carrying messages of positivity.
His journey will begin at Chichester Cathedral and end at Chichester Festival Theatre. Along the way, he will visit businesses including galleries, cafés, salons and independent retailers, many of which will decorate their shopfronts as part of a floral trail linked to Chichester in Bloom.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy a free dandelion-making workshop on Chichester Cathedral Green, a performance from West Sussex Sings Choir, flower-inspired storytelling, recycled music from Beats for 3, bike-powered kids’ karaoke, and sustainable workshops at Pallant House Gallery and The Novium Museum.
Around 150 Morris dancers will also perform through the city before heading to Priory Park for a final Community Dance.
“This is a real collaborative effort, and we’re so pleased to be working together with our wonderful cultural organisations and businesses to bring this free event to the city centre,” says Sarah Peyman, Divisional Manager for Culture and Sport at Chichester District Council.
“The Walk of the Dandelion will be a magical, feel-good event for all ages and we really want people to come and be part of the story as we celebrate the cathedral’s 30th Festival of Flowers and mark ‘Big Green Week’.”
