Visitors to Beachy Head near Eastbourne have enjoyed the weekend on Birling Gap beach after repair work was completed ahead of schedule and opened on Friday. (24/04/2026)
The popular beauty spot had been closed for two months after cliff falls damaged the staircase leading from the car park at Birling Gap down to the beach.
Wealden District Council, which manages the foreshore on behalf of The Crown Estate and owns the staircase, appointed contractors to oversee and carry out the repair project.
Monson Engineering was brought in as the consulting principal engineer, while Wealden-based company CJ Thorne & Co completed the structural repair works.
The council has confirmed the works are now complete and the beach will reopen to the public from Friday 24 April 2026.
The reopening comes earlier than expected, allowing visitors and residents to return to one of the area’s best-known coastal locations.
A Wealden District Council spokesperson said, “We are pleased that Birling Gap beach is opening ahead of schedule as it allows our residents to enjoy a much-loved scenic area especially in the great weather we are currently having.
“We would like to express thanks to the National Trust, RNLI and the Coastguard for their continued support and the contractors for completing the works ahead of time.”
Visitors are reminded that Birling Gap sits beneath an eroding chalk cliff coastline, where cliff falls can happen without warning. The beach remains a popular destination for walkers, families and tourists visiting the Eastbourne and Beachy Head area.
