Temperatures across Sussex dropped below freezing overnight, prompting gritting teams to take action in an effort to keep the region's road network safe. As conditions began to deteriorate on Tuesday evening, West Sussex County Council confirmed that its fleet of gritting vehicles was sent out from 7pm, covering all major routes and priority roads. The authority said teams had been on standby throughout the day as forecasts indicated a sharp fall in temperatures, bringing an increased risk of ice.
East Sussex County Council also activated its winter service response, with crews treating all primary routes before conditions worsened. The council said it follows a well-rehearsed winter maintenance plan that involves monitoring detailed road surface temperature forecasts and deploying gritters whenever freezing conditions are expected.
Authorities say they are prepared for further drops in temperature in the coming days. Salt stocks across both counties are reported to be at healthy levels, with regular resupplies planned throughout the winter period.
Motorists are being reminded that while gritting helps reduce the risk of ice, it does not guarantee completely clear or hazard-free roads. Councils advise allowing extra time for journeys, reducing speed and leaving plenty of space between vehicles.
