A teenager from Hailsham who lost his leg in a motorbike accident on the A27 is back on two wheels – thanks to a charity that helps injured riders regain their independence and confidence.

Ted Spurrell was involved in a serious crash last year that left doctors with no option but to amputate his leg just above the knee. The devastating injury forced him to give up riding, the sport and passion he had grown up with.

But after months of recovery and rehabilitation, Ted is back in the saddle with the support of a state-of-the-art prosthetic and a charity determined to show injured bikers that life on two wheels doesn’t have to end after an accident.

Ted now uses a prosthetic limb known as a microprocessor knee. Unlike traditional prosthetics, it contains a built-in computer that constantly adjusts to provide balance and support in real time, making walking, standing – and even riding a motorbike – possible again.

Recently, Surrey-based charity The Bike Experience invited Ted to Silverstone racetrack for a special riding day designed to give amputees and other injured bikers the chance to experience the thrill of motorcycling again in a safe and supportive environment.

The Bike Experience works with volunteer instructors to adapt motorbikes and training sessions for riders who have lost limbs or suffered life-changing injuries. The charity has helped hundreds of people get back on bikes, not just for the love of riding but also as part of their physical and emotional recovery.

For Ted, the day at Silverstone marked a significant milestone - Ted’s story highlights how vital specialist support and innovative technology can be in helping young people rebuild their lives after serious injury.
