A man who assaulted and abused a woman at an address in Crowborough has now been jailed for his actions.
Between April 2024, and May 2025, the victim, a woman in her 60s, was attacked on a number of occasions by 64-year-old Ashley Gaunt.
Gaunt, of Poplar Crescent, West Ewell, began the pattern of violence in April, 2024, repeatedly punching the victim, as well as verbally abusing her.
The final incident left the victim fighting for her life on 12 May 2025, when Gaunt approached the victim and attacked her while making threats that he was going to kill her. He dragged her by her hair and attempted to smother her.
The victim escaped and the incident was reported, leading to Gaunt being located and placed in cuffs the same day.
He was conditionally bailed while the wider investigation took place, resulting in charges being authorised in December.
On 10 December, 2025, Gaunt appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court, charged with five counts of assault, one of intentional suffocation and one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Gaunt pleaded guilty to the offences, and was bailed ahead of his sentencing.
On 11 February at Lewes Crown Court, Gaunt was sentenced to three years in prison and given a 10 year restraining order.
The officer who led the investigation, PC Tobie Whitten, said,
"Ashley Gaunt left the victim in fear of the nights, as that is when she felt she would suffer most.
"The victim bravely came forward and reported the violence and abuse she had suffered at the hands of Gaunt, and he now sits behind bars after admitting to what he did.
"Women and girls should never fall victim to physical, emotional or psychological harm. We must continue to strive for change, and ensure men who feel they can behave in such a way are held accountable.
"If you are a victim of domestic violence, the police are there to help and to take action against those responsible. Reach out, we are here to listen and we will take you seriously."
