Bognor and Littlehampton MP Alison Griffiths has strongly criticised Government plans to delay the forthcoming mayoral elections for Sussex and Brighton, as well as Hampshire and the Solent.
The elections, which were originally expected to take place next year, are now set to be pushed back to 2028 under proposals currently being considered in Westminster.
Speaking out after the plans were outlined, the Conservative MP said the government was abusing its power and urged ministers to reconsider.
However, the Government maintains that the delay is necessary. In Parliament, the Local Government Minister said the Government is “minded” to postpone the elections to allow more time to ensure the new mayoral structures are fully prepared. He told MPs that creating these new combined authorities is a complex process, involving agreements between councils, legal frameworks, and the development of long-term strategies for housing, transport, skills and economic growth.
