More than 500 people have responded to a survey on the future of the fire-damaged Angel Inn site in Midhurst.
MP Andrew Griffith says early results show overwhelming support for action — with 95 per cent backing intervention if needed.
The site has stood idle for three years, with no planning application yet submitted.
He’s now calling on planning authorities to step in, potentially using compulsory purchase powers to move things forward.

“After 3 years of this horrific façade, loss of business and chaos in the town, enough is enough.”
“100% demolition to clear site, the historic facade can be made to look old (the rendered elevation is much newer than the remainder of the building. A good heritage architect and construction company will be able to rebuild with sympathetic design/construction techniques.”
“Please just knock it down now and open up the footpath again. The poor shops are really suffering that side of the street. Rebuild with new materials doing their best to make it look in keeping with the town and original building.”
“Clear the whole ruined site asap then rebuild a facsimile. There are enough photos for a good architect and builder to recreate the front and preserve the appearance of the High Street. Please consider the case of Hinton Ampner House, not far from Winchester. It was a listed building destroyed by fire. The core of the building is a fireproof concrete structure. The outer walls are copies and you would never know.”
Andrew Griffith MP said: “The feedback from residents and businesses is very useful. I still want to hear from more voices to ensure that it is as representative as possible but so far, the findings point to a clear desire for quick action and for authorities to take a pragmatic solution for the site.
As MP I want all the various authorities not to point fingers at each other but to work together on a solution fast. This survey gives me the vital ammunition to hold them to account to do just that.”
