Health officials in Sussex say they are closely monitoring a meningitis outbreak in Canterbury which has resulted in a number of deaths.
NHS Sussex confirmed it is working with partners, including the UK Health Security Agency, to keep track of the situation and receive regular updates. At present, there have been no reported cases of meningitis linked to the outbreak in Kent. However, residents are being reminded to remain vigilant and to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia, which can develop quickly and become life-threatening if not treated promptly. Symptoms can include a severe and worsening headache, a sudden high fever, a stiff neck, vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as joint and muscle pain. Other warning signs include sensitivity to bright lights, very cold hands and feet, confusion or delirium, and extreme drowsiness. In some cases, a rash may appear that does not fade when pressed with a glass. Seizures may also occur. Health experts are urging anyone who suspects meningitis or septicaemia to seek urgent medical attention. People are advised to go straight to their nearest Accident and Emergency department or call 999 if symptoms are severe. While there are currently no confirmed cases locally, authorities say they will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as necessary. More information about meningitis, including guidance on symptoms and treatment, is available on the NHS website.
