Residents in Bognor Regis are being invited to help shape plans for a new coastal regeneration scheme aimed at celebrating the town’s maritime heritage.

Residents in Bognor Regis are being invited to help shape plans for a new coastal regeneration scheme aimed at celebrating the town’s maritime heritage.

Arun District Council is hosting public drop-in events to gather feedback on the emerging Marine Quarter project, which aims to revitalise part of the town’s seafront while supporting the local fishing community and protecting the marine environment.

The project focuses on three connected locations that together form a wider vision for the future of the coastline.

One key element is the seabed off the Bognor Regis coast, which is home to a range of marine habitats including kelp forests, shellfish and a diverse range of coastal species. The project aims to highlight the importance of this environment while creating opportunities for education, research and conservation through partnerships with environmental organisations.

Another part of the scheme involves improvements to the town’s wet fish stall. The project aims to support the Bognor Fishermen’s Association through grant funding that would help enhance the retail space used by the local fishing community.

The third element focuses on the ground floor of the vacant plot at Waterloo Square, which has been identified as a potential location for a new public-facing facility such as a marine-themed visitor, research or education centre.

Together, the three sites are intended to support the fishing industry, strengthen environmental stewardship and create new experiences that celebrate Bognor Regis’ connection with the sea.

Residents will be able to view concept material, speak with project officers and share their views at two upcoming events. These will take place at The Waverley Pub on Marine Drive West on Saturday 28 March between 11am and 2pm, and at the RAFA Club in Waterloo Square on Tuesday 31 March from 2pm until 5pm.

Cllr Roger Nash, Chair of the Economy Committee at Arun District Council, said:
“The Marine Quarter is an exciting project. I am glad to see this moving forward in Bognor Regis. There is so much to celebrate about our unique marine environment and local fishing heritage. I urge residents to come along and find out more”.

Dean Spears, Head of Sussex Bay and the project team, said:
"Sussex Bay are delighted to be working with communities in Bognor Regis to explore the exciting opportunities offered by the Marine Quarter. By bringing together the richness of the marine environment, local heritage, and the value this space holds for residents, including the Bognor Fishermen's Association, we can shape a shared vision that celebrates the town's identity and its future potential. We look forward to hearing from local communities, so please do get involved."
