Amberley Museum and Selsey Community Forum are amongst the winners of this year's Kings Award for Voluntary Service. This is the highest honour a volunteer service can be given, equivalent to an MBE, and it is awarded for life
Selsey Community Forum has been chosen to receive the King’s Award for Voluntary Service recognising our 13 years now of service in the community. . This award truly is a absolute testament to the hard work and commitment of the Selsey Community Forum staff and volunteers and we could not be prouder of them.
Chairman Mike Nicholls said: “We are delighted, humbled and honoured to receive this award as we seek to make a positive difference to those in need.”
Selsey Community Forum works in various partnerships to address loneliness, offer support to voluntary carers, those living with dementia, those unemployed and in financial need, the housebound, those struggling with mental health and concerned with environmental matters, all of which is accessed through Selsey Care Shop.
They have been operating 13 years, working with over 200 volunteers and regularly supporting upwards of 1500 people in our community.
The popular Amberley Museum is another recipient of the award out of 262 nationally.
.Amberley Museum has over 350 active volunteers who restore, maintain, operate and demonstrate exhibits to visitors.
The Museum is host to this thriving volunteer community, without whom it would not operate. Amberley Museum arose from a concept created in the 1970s by a group of architects, surveyors, planners and museum professionals who felt there was a need for a centre in the south-east where industrial and social history could be conserved and interpreted in an active working environment. It showcases and preserves the rural, transport, industrial and communications history of the south of England for the learning and enjoyment of today’s visitors and future generations.
Richard Vernon (Chair of Trustees for Amberley Museum) says: “I am thrilled that the dedication, commitment and contribution of Amberley Museum Volunteers has been recognised through the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service. I am always struck by the variety of skills and knowledge our volunteers bring to the Museum, which are shared with other volunteers and to the wider visiting public.”
The museum has a strong connection with the community, providing opportunities for volunteers to support the museum’s goals and enjoy the associated social environment.
