Residents in Adur and Worthing are being warned about a suspected scam involving individuals posing as environmental enforcement officers.
Adur and Worthing Councils say reports have been received of people approaching dog walkers and accusing them of breaching Public Space Protection Orders. In at least one case, the suspects allegedly threatened a £1,000 fine and pressured the individual to make an immediate payment to avoid further action.
The council has confirmed the individuals involved are not genuine officers and has urged residents to remain vigilant.
Officials say legitimate enforcement is carried out by National Enforcement Solutions (NES), whose officers follow strict procedures and carry clear identification.
Residents are being reminded to always ask to see official identification with a photograph if approached. Genuine NES officers will also be wearing branded uniforms and body-worn cameras, and any incident they deal with will be formally logged. A receipt will always be issued for any notice or fine.
The warning comes amid concerns that members of the public could be targeted and pressured into handing over money or personal details.
Suspected cases should be reported to Sussex Police, particularly if individuals feel threatened or have been asked to hand over money.
Residents are also encouraged to share information with neighbours and local community groups to help raise awareness of the scam and prevent others from becoming victims.
