Work is set to begin on a scheme to improve safety and accessibility along St Paul’s Road in Chichester later this month.
West Sussex County Council has confirmed that construction will start on Monday 13 April 2026, with the project expected to be completed by Friday 1 May. The improvements form part of the authority’s Local Transport Improvement Programme.
The scheme is designed to make it easier and safer for people to walk, wheel and cycle along the route, particularly for those travelling to and from nearby schools.
Planned works include the installation of tactile paving to assist visually impaired users, resurfacing in several areas, reinstatement of kerb lines, and the addition of bollards. Existing road markings will also be refreshed once construction is complete.
New school warning signs featuring timed flashing amber lights will be introduced, while vegetation will be cleared to improve visibility at crossing points.
The council says the upgrades aim to make crossings safer and more accessible for all users, improve sight lines for both pedestrians and drivers, and encourage more people to choose active travel by creating a clearer and more comfortable route.
To minimise disruption, work will take place between 9.30am and 3pm, Monday to Friday. Temporary multi-way traffic signals will be used at various stages, but no road closures or diversion routes are planned. Emergency services will continue to have access throughout.
Advance warning signs will be installed locally ahead of the works to help residents plan their journeys.
As with all highway projects, the schedule may be affected by adverse weather, and any changes will be communicated as early as possible. Residents can report issues via the county council’s website. https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/make-an-enquiry-or-report-a-problem-with-a-road-or-pavement/.
