A yellow heat health alert has been issued for the South, with health officials warning that warmer conditions could put extra pressure on vulnerable people and local services.
The alert comes into force at 4pm today, Thursday 28 May 2026, and is due to remain in place until 8pm on Saturday 30 May 2026.
The risk score has been set at eight, with the impact classed as low but the likelihood rated as high.
Minor impacts are expected across health and social care services during the alert period. This could include increased use of healthcare services by vulnerable people, particularly those who are elderly, very young, or living with long-term health conditions.
Officials are also warning of a greater risk to life among vulnerable groups if people are unable to keep cool or access support during the warmest periods.
Indoor environments could also become very warm, especially in homes, care settings and other buildings that are difficult to ventilate. People are being encouraged to keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of fluids, and check on relatives, neighbours and friends who may be more at risk.
The alert also highlights concerns around water-related incidents, with more people expected to head to beaches, rivers, lakes and open water during the warmer weather.
There is a warning that incidents may increase, including the risks of cold-water shock and drowning. Even when air temperatures are high, open water can remain dangerously cold.
People are being urged to take extra care if spending time outdoors, avoid overexertion during the hottest parts of the day, and seek medical advice if they feel unwell.
The yellow alert is currently due to end at 8pm on Saturday.
