Residents, businesses and community groups across Chichester District are being reminded to have their say on proposed dog control rules in public spaces.
Chichester District Council is reviewing its Public Space Protection Order for dog control, which is due to expire in October 2026.
The consultation closes at 5pm on Friday 5 June 2026 and includes proposals to extend and amend the existing rules.
At the moment, the requirement to immediately remove dog mess applies only to public land, including footpaths, verges, parks and the foreshore.
The council is proposing to extend this so it applies to all publicly accessible land across the district, including privately owned land that is open to the public and free to enter, excluding Forestry Commission land.
Existing dog exclusion areas would remain in place, including fenced children’s play areas on public land, Priory Park and Bishop’s Palace Gardens in Chichester, and the seasonal exclusion on part of Selsey Beach from May to September.
The council is also proposing to make all fenced publicly accessible children’s play areas on privately owned land dog-free throughout the year.
Cllr Jonathan Brown, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environmental Strategy, says: “We’ve had a fantastic response to our consultation so far and would like to thank everyone who has taken part! If you’re yet to share your views, there’s still time to do so before the survey closes on Friday 5 June.
“Public spaces play an important role in everyday life across the district, and we want to ensure they can be enjoyed by everyone. We know that most dog owners are responsible, but unfortunately some people do not pick up after their dog or keep their dog under proper control.”
The consultation also asks for early views on possible future dog-control measures in parts of Chichester Harbour, following evidence that off-lead dogs can disturb protected bird species.
