Scrutiny committee to discuss NHS England proposal to change neonatal services in Western Sussex

Proposals to make the neonatal service at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester into a Special Care Unit (SCU) will be discussed at the next meeting of the council’s Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee (HASC).

Proposals to make the neonatal service at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester into a Special Care Unit (SCU) will be discussed at the next meeting of the council’s Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Committee (HASC).

NHS England says the proposed changes will accurately reflect the needs of most babies that require care at the hospital.

A report to HASC by NHS England Specialised Commissioning South East, says making the neonatal unit at St Richard’s a SCU means that some low birthweight and sick babies will be cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Portsmouth Hospitals University Hospitals Trust, which already provides a service for the very smallest and sickest babies from St Richard’s.

The full report is available to read on the council’s website, ahead of the meeting which will take place at County Hall, in Chichester, on Monday, 7 March and webcast live from 10.30am.

Other items on the meeting agenda include an update on Adults’ Services Quality Assurance, and a report by the Director of Law and Assurance, setting out the finance and performance position as at the end of December 2021.

The full HASC agenda is available on the council’s website.

There will be a reduced capacity public gallery available to anyone wishing to attend and view the meeting in person. Admission is by ticket only, bookable in advance by emailing democratic.services@westsussex.gov.uk.

Details of Covid-19 safety measures in place at County Hall will be provided to anyone booking to attend in person.
