Detectives investigating a report of arson at a mosque in Peacehaven have made a second arrest.
Emergency services were called to the building in Phyllis Avenue around 9.50pm on Saturday, 4 October.
Footage showed two people wearing masks and dark clothing approaching the front door before spraying accelerant on the entrance of the mosque and igniting a fire.
Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service promptly attended the scene and were able to extinguish the fire. Fortunately, those inside at the time were not injured, but significant damage was caused to the mosque and a nearby vehicle.
A 46-year-old man from Littlehampton, who was arrested on Monday afternoon (6 October) on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, has been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
On Tuesday 7 October, a 25-year-old man, of no fixed address, was also arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He remains in police custody at this time.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cullimore from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team said: “We believe there are people in the community who know who is responsible for this appalling and reckless attack and we are urging anyone with information which could be vital to our investigation, to come forward.
