Police in Sussex say they’re stepping up patrols as Freshers’ Week gets underway at universities across the county.

Officers will be joined by Night Safety Marshals and community partners, focusing on reassurance and support for students enjoying the night-time economy.

Police say they work closely with licensed venues year-round, with security checks, sniffer dogs and direct contact in place to deal quickly with any issues.

It's understood that some locations in Sussex also have taxi marshals to help you get home safely, and beaches patrolled by partners on quad bikes and a police drone, to spot vulnerable people and respond rapidly to any issues.

Detective Superintendent Andy Harbour said: “Sussex is a safe place to enjoy a night out and, thankfully, instances of spiking are relatively rare.

“Unfortunately there will always be a minority of people looking to take advantage of vulnerable people or cause harm in the night-time economy. Sadly, we know that women and girls are more likely to fall victim to this predatory behaviour – a fact that is absolutely unacceptable.

“We remain committed to protecting women and girls, as well as all who visit our night-time economies.

“If you are a victim of crime, please tell bar or security staff, report to police online or via 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said: “During my time as Police & Crime Commissioner, I've made tackling violence, especially against women and girls, a priority. Spiking is no joke – it is both dangerous and a criminal offence.  Spiking can make someone unwell and expose vulnerabilities with extremely harmful effects.

“I am pleased that Sussex Police and partner organisations share my dedication to tackling this crime. The force has several initiatives in place to keep people safe and enable them to enjoy the night-time entertainment that Sussex offers.  This is especially important for our students over the coming weeks, as Freshers events take place. We are lucky to live in a county rich with arts, culture and heritage and members of the public should be able to enjoy these without the fear of spiking looming large.”
